Guest Speaker + Dance Teacher at Canadian Federation of University Women
April 19, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
I was invited to speak and teach for the Canadian Federation of University Women. At first I thought it was a mistake due to an assumption that a dance company owner must be a woman. It wasn’t a mistake – they knew who I was – and it actually is appropriate:
My grandparents did not believe in education for women, but my mom eventually put herself through university and got a PhD, with me born mid-PhD. When I became her sole caregiver (for 10 years), we created a play about our family – using our home as a case study for global transformation – moving from conflict to collective creation. (4½ stars – Edmonton Journal, 3 full episodes on CBC TV.)
During that project I began studying dance more seriously. I later created many dance productions, including Graves-a-Poppin’ (performed at the Canadian Swing Championships; “everyone agreed really stole the show” – History of Swing official summary), Neurogenesis (performed at Advances in Neurorehabilitation + other conferences), and Sexpectations (improv comedy / real live drama). The partnering skills and embodied playfulness from dance changed my life, and seem to me essential for a healthy culture.
When I moved to Orangeville, lamenting the lack of dance opportunities for adults – especially social dancing – I created Dance Orangeville, where I teach many styles of dance. (It’s like traveling around the world – with a time machine.)
For CFUW, I will lead a line dance and an interactive dance. Get a ‘taste’ of why I love both roles in lead-follow partner dances, and try a type of partner dance with no roles.
At “The Centre”, 375 Hansen Blvd, Orangeville.
